The two-minute pitch that I always give before starting a new engagement

  1. I’m Israeli and very direct. I might cut you off in the middle of a sentence. Don’t take it personally. We have limited amounts of time, and I want to make sure we get the most out of it.
  2. I’m a business mentor, not a consultant. A consultant will do the work for you. That’s not what we’re doing here. I’m going to change the way you think about things, I’m going to illuminate things you might not have thought of, and I’m going to guide you in the right direction. But - the make or break of this process is dependent on your actions.
  3. I’m going to provide you with “next steps” at the end of each session. Follow them - and we’ll move forward. Do nothing - and we’ll go nowhere.
  4. I might not answer your questions, and I might answer questions you haven’t asked me. Sometimes mentees come to me with particular tactical questions. My role is first to ask: “Is this the right tactic?” Many times we come to the joint conclusion that it’s not the right direction. So why should we spend any time on that?
  5. I don’t have an interest in your business; I have an interest in you. We often get stuck on a path we chose just because we decided to walk it once upon a time. My role is to help you get from point A to point B in the easiest form. It means focusing on you, the mentee, and not necessarily on your business as you originally planned it. Your first idea might not be the best fit for you as an individual, and if it’s not a good fit, you will have to work 10X harder.
  6. The more you tell me, the better my advice to you will be.That’s all I have to offer you: advice that is based on my experience and education. You can take it or leave it (but you should usually take it).

This two-minute pitch I give at the beginning of each new session sets us up for success. It conveys the spirit of our future sessions and lets you know everything you can and should expect.
